Gourmet Artist Cooks, Paints and Sculpts Gourds

Merilou Jenkins Merilou Jenkins, a California artist, taught gourmet cooking courses and practiced law for several years and always felt that something was missing from her life. Merilou’s love for the arts continued to weigh heavy on her mind and in her heart until she returned to the field of the arts that she enjoys as her true fulfillment. For several years she’s taught art in high school during the week and on weekends she is found busy passionately designing, sculpting and painting her gourds. She takes a plain boring gourd and majestically creates unique, dramatic masks, African sculptures of man or animal.

Her work has been honored by receiving numerous awards for Best of Show, Best Mixed Media Art, Best Organic Art, Best Three-Dimensional Art, as well as numerous first, and second place awards in various juried competitions. Merilou’s work has also been featured in several industry publications such as The Golden Gourd and School Arts magazine with the most recent being the October 2005 issue of The Crafts Report as well as the Fall 2005 cover story of Art Doll Quarterly.
